Student Quality in the Humanities: Opinions of Senior Academic Officials

The survey was designed to reflect the opinions of senior academic officials about the quality of undergraduates, graduate school applicants, and doctorate recipients in the humanities over the last five years and the principal indicators on which their opinions were based. Also sought were respondents' opinions about shifts in the distribution of the most able students within the humanities and between the humanities and other fields; the reasons for such shifts; the humanities fields that have had the greatest increase in the share of the most able students; and the number of doctorate recipients in 1981-82 and how those recipients compared with those of 1976-77.
