The Cook County Hospital Classification of Emergency Room Diagnoses is designed to provide a short listing of discharge diagnoses commonly used in the emergency room setting. The choice of diagnoses was guided by the experience of the medical staff of the emergency services of the Cook County Hospital, a nearly 1,000 bed public inner-city hospital in Chicago, Illinois. The classification was designed to provide quick and easy categorization of a patient's diagnosis at the time of discharge from the emergency service.
