The goal of the project is to evaluate the practicality of using restriction enzyme polymorphisms (RFP) in applied plant breeding problems, specifically the introgression of useful traits from undomesticated isolates to domesticated cultivars. Evaluated was the ability of RFPs to genetically mark the quantitative traits for insect resistance, salt tolerance, and high soluble solids available in wild Lycopersicons (tomato) and accelerate their introgression by back-crossing into the domestic esculentums. The approach involved constructing a genetic map for tomato based entirely upon RFPs and then applying these random markers to constructed F2 populations segregating for each trait. The inheritance of those traits in subsequent back-cross generations.
