Maximization of Agar Biosynthesis in the Red Algae

摘要

The purpose of the research was to survey various agarophytes for their agar content, growth rate, and ease of cultivation in small-volume culture; and to determine the physiology and metabolic biochemistry of selected species. A novel screening system to identify plants producing high-value agars using monoclonal antibodies was also developed. Work was undertaken to create mutant strains and genetic hybrids of candidate species. Research revealed the physiological factors important for maximizing growth rate and the yield of agar. Biochemical studies located some key regulatory enzymes in general photosynthesis and the biosynthesis of agar.
