Design and development of implantable and external components of the ventricular assist system were completed, including blood pump, energy converter, implanted battery/controller, variable volume device, and externally worn battery holster set. An integrated power delivery subsystem was completed that accepts power transmitted across the intact skin. The first fully integrated Ventricular Assist System (VAS) was studied in vivo. An automatic VAS characterization system having a computerized mock-circulatory loop was designed and built. The first VAS in vitro endurance life test is ongoing at 29.8 million cycles. Eight in vivo studies were undertaken in calves, including one experiment to evaluate the Transcutaneous Energy Transmission System (TETS). The longest VAS study was 77 days. Fifteen blood pumps and six energy converters were fabricated.
