Monitoring Seabird Populations in the Alaska Outer Continental Shelf Region. Proceedings of a Conference Held at Anchorage, Alaska, November 15-17, 1984

On November 15-17, 1984, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) convened a conference to identify appropriate strategies and techniques for monitoring seabird populations. The conference participants included representatives of MMS and FWS, together with other experts on seabird biology from the country and Canada. The conference discussed information concerning: the distribution, the abundance, and the status of marine birds for use by MMS in describing environments potentially affected by oil and gas development; in estimating the magnitude of projected effects; and in discriminating between alternative courses of leasing action. Also discussed, were strategies for best use of resources and personnel in monitoring the short-term status and long-term trends of marine bird populations in OCS lease areas.
