Behavior of a system in a dynamic impoundment model is described by a set of simultaneous partial differential equations. Accuracy and validity of the model is dependent upon coefficients utilized in the model. Review of the literature indicates that previous investigators have addressed the problems of coefficient variability and uncertainty in a number of ways. In semi-empirical models standard and rather simple statistical concepts are used. At the present time only one commonly available dynamic impoundment water quality model, CE-QUAL-RI, has the capability of taking coefficient uncertainty into account. Other techniques may yield more cost-effective results in terms of modeling simplicity and computer utilization.
