Precision of Coal Mine Dust Sampling

The precision of coal mine dust sampling was evaluated. Data was obtained from all relevant literature and unpublished studies conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), NIOSH, and the Bureau of Mines. Coefficients of variation were determined. Coefficients of variation as a function of error source were analyzed using data obtained by routine field sampling by the Dust Division of MSHA. The contribution of weighing errors to the coefficient of variation increased as sample size decreased. The authors conclude that coal mine dust concentration measurements made in the field by trained personnel have a precision of approximately 20 percent. Most of the inaccuracy results from random errors in sampling.
