Diethylstilbestrol: Reproduction and Fertility Assessment in CD-1 Mice When Administered in Feed (Revised November 1984, EHRT)

Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a synthetic estrogen which can mimic naturally occurring estrogens. DES was introduced as a therapeutic agent in 1941. As early as 1946, DES was utilized as a treatment for threatened abortions in women during the first trimester (review by McLachlan and Dixon, 1976). The reproductive toxicity of DES was evaluated according to the Fertility Assessment by Continuous Breeding (FACB) protocol (Appendix I). This protocol has been designed very recently and is currently under evaluation. Since DES is a known reproductive toxicant, it was tested to check the validity of the FACB protocol.
