Visual Acuity Impairment Survey Pilot Study

The Visual Acuity Impairment Survey has been proposed by the NEI as one of several types of epidemiologic studies needed to (a) provide descriptive information on the prevalence and distribution of eye diseases among the population and on causes of visual acuity impairment, and (b) supply cases and controls for tests of etiologic hypotheses. A pilot study was conducted on a one-year HIS sample in three SMSAs to determine whether (1) the Census Bureau interviewers who carry out the HIS can screen visual acuity reasonably accurately, (2) large proportions of the potential study subjects who voluntarily participate in both the home screening and clinic examinations and (3) the content of the clinic examinations and forms for recording data are suitable to meet the objectives.
