摘要

The 45-acre Lone Pine Landfill is situated on a 144-acre wooded parcel owned by the Lone Pine Corporation in Freehold Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. The landfill is approximately 500 feet south of the headwaters of the Manasquan River and 1,000 feet south of the Turkey Swamp Fish and Wildlife Management area. The Lone Pine Landfill operated from 1959 until 1979 when it was ordered closed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. While it was open, wastes accepted at the landfill included municipal refuse and septage wastes, at least 17,000 drums and several million gallons of bulk liquid chemicals. The major class of contaminants being released from the landfill are volatile organic compounds, notably benzene, chlorobenzene, methyl chloride, toluene and vinyl chloride. The cost-effective remedial alternative which was selected for this site includes installation of a slurry wall, approximately 30 feet through the Vincentown aquifer; a multi-layer surface seal over the 45-acre landfill; installation of ground water collection wells located within the contained zone; treatment of ground water collected from within the contained zone; and monitoring to determine the effectiveness of the remedy. The estimated present worth capital cost for this remedy is $10,642,050 and the annual O&M costs are $324,734.
