Research Needs in Renewable Materials Engineering, Workshop, West Lafayette, Indiana, October 18-20, 1983

A compilation is presented of most of the topics covered at a workshop held to identify the engineering research needs that must be met before processes can be implemented that will yield useful products from renewable materials. Types of processes that are discussed include chemical processes, separation processes, fermentation processes, and immobilized cell and enzyme processes. Thermochemical biomass conversion and the conversion of naturally occurring oils were also considered. The multi-disciplinary nature of the engineering research was stressed, and the need for fundamental research was noted. Finally, the establishment of a large research center in biotechnology or renewable materials engineering was recommended.
