Three-phase fluid bed expansion was studied at atmospheric pressure and room temperature in a 5 cm. inside diameter glass column. The solid phase studied was either porous alumina or nickel molybdate-alumina spherical particles, which were fluidized by nitrogen gas in conjunction with a liquid phase. Water, heptane, kerosene, and number 2 fuel oil were the liquids investigated. A select number of 2-phase liquid fluidized bed expansion runs were made with the type solids mentioned above using the same liquids and including ethylene glycol. Porous-spherical particle size or equivalent spherical particle sizes for a cylindrical extrudate catalyst also considered ranged from 1.2mm to 3.1mm in the subject study.
