Distribution of the Income Loss Occasioned by Recession: A National Income Accounting Framework

This report compares data on actual income from various sources with theoretical income potential to estimate distribution of income loss occasioned by recessions in 1970, 1973-1975 and 1980-1982. The major sources of income studies are employee compensation and profits. Part I presents a comprehensive overview of the impact of recession on National Income and its major components. The relative employee compensation gap tended to increase from the recession of 1973-1975 to the recession of 1980-1982 due to the increase in interest income. Part II explores the impact of recession on labor force participation and in particular the impact on various age, sex and ethnic groups in a variety of occupations and locations.
