摘要

A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a groundwater-interception trench for treating potential groundwater contamination originating from a solid-waste landfill operation and to evaluate the long-term impact of landfill operations on groundwater quality. The research was conducted at the Brookings Municipal Landfill, located in Brookings, South Dakota, that has been operational since 1960. Groundwater samples were collected during 1979 through 1983 from aquifer observation wells located 'upstream' and 'downstream' from the landfill site as well as the interception trench located downstream from the landfill site and analyzed for four heavy metals (cadmium, lead, mercury, and selenium), six organic pesticides (Lindane, Endrin, Methoxychlor, Toxaphene, 2,4-D, and 2,4,5-TP), and four other groundwater quality parameters (chloride, sulfate, conductivity, and pH). No significant difference was measured in the concentration of the four heavy metals or the six organic pesticides among the 'upstream' and 'downstream' observation wells and the interception trench.
