Solvent sublation techniques for the removal of trace organics from aqueous systems were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Laboratory scale studies on dichlorobenzenes. Aroclor 1254 (a PCB mixture), lindane, endrin, CH3CC13, naphthalene and phenanthrene suggest the feasibility of these techniques for removing hydrophobic organics from aqueous systems. Two dyes and two nitrophenols were removed as ion complexes with ionic surfactants. Preliminary batch pilot scale studies with naphthalene indicated the importance of small bubble size in improving removal efficiency. The presence of added salts appears to slightly increase removal rates of hydrophobic organics, but markedly decreases removal rates of ionic complexes. The presence of organic solvents decreases removal rates somewhat. Theoretical studies included the estimation of absorption isotherm parameters and mass transfer rate coefficients, and the mathematical modeling of equilibrium controlled and mass transfer controlled column operation in batch and continuous-flow modes.
