Hyperbaric Oxygen for Treatment of Chronic Peripheral Vascular Insufficiency

The Office of Health Technology Assessment (OHTA) emphasizes three basic principles in its assessment activities: (1) broad and open participation both within and outside of the Federal government, (2) reliance on the expertise and research abilities of outside organizations and individuals, and (3) broad dissemination of assessment reports. This assessment focuses on hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) for treatment of chronic peripheral vascular insufficiency. HBO therapy does not appear to be widely accepted within the medical community as a modality for the treatment of lesions related to chronic peripheral insufficiency. Safety does not appear to be an issue when the technology is applied under treatment criteria developed for its application in the treatment of wounds, especially if this is done under the supervision of physicians, nurses, and technicians trained and experienced in HBO therapy. However, although HBO therapy appears to be relatively safe when used for the indications noted in this report, data to support its clinical effectiveness is lacking.
