The purpose of the conference was to disseminate tested engineering, education, and enforcement procedures to reduce the incidence of pedestrian accidents, and to present approaches utilized in the United States, Canada and Europe to create visually attractive, functional, and well utilized pedestrian spaces. The safety material includes discussions of accident typing, safety education programs for children, links to safety belt and alcohol programs, and case studies of Seattle, San Francisco, and Denver. The design concept material includes data on pedestrian walking patterns, case studies of a number of foreign cities, approaches to the design of pedestrian malls, and marketing of pedestrian approaches. The document should be of special interest to urban planners, environmentalists, and people in public safety positions.
