Economic Indicators of the Farm Sector. Income and Balance Sheet Statistics, 1983

This report details the farm sector's financial status in 1983 on earnings, assets, and liabilities. Cash income increased $16.2 billion to $44.7 billion, ending the downward trend which began in 1980. Increased crop marketings from inventories and the Government's payment-in-kind program generated much of the increase. Total farm assets (including farm households) dipped 1 percent to $1.03 trillion as of January 1, 1984, mainly because of a decline in farm real estate value. Total farm production expenses decreased 3 percent to $135.3 billion.
