Evaluation of Workshops on Nutrition Counseling. Workshop Impact and Cost Report

National programs for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease include efforts to change food habits. As these efforts expand there will be an increased need for nutrition personnel trained in this specialty. The Institute sponsored an experimental series of regional workshops to improve and maintain the nutrition knowledge and counseling skills of hyperlipidemia practicing nutritionists. The purpose of this project was to determine whether the workshops were effective and whether they could be effectively applied on a national basis without Institute assistance. The project examined the effects on enrollees, the management of the workshops, and their cost. Procedures used to assess the impact of the workshops on the participants included the use of cognitive achievement tests, tape-recorded interviews, self-report questionnaires, evaluation forms, and telephone interviews. Results of the data analysis indicated that participant attitudes showed positive changes over the course of the workshops and that they gained in a variety of skills and techniques.
