Relative Shares of World Patents in National Patent Markets

Relative advantage Indices are calculated for the United States, West Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and France, in Robotics, Lasers, Microbiology/Embriology, Internal Combustion Engines, and Steel and Iron. These indices describe the change in the shares of various patent markets for these technologies which are accounted for by residents of these countries, between the two time periods 1975-77 and 1980-82. The U.S. share of patents granted by major patent authorities has generally fallen. This drop is largest in Robotics, while U.S. inventors have generally maintained their shares in Microbiology/Enzymology and in Iron and Steel.
