摘要

This volume presents, for the first time, the results of investigations on the biology of perennial fodder plants in the cultivated plant associations of the northeastern USSR. It throws light on ecological and biological aspects of cultivation of perennial grasses on the frozen soils of the basins of the Lena, Vilui and Kolyma Rivers. The contributors have discussed the effect of minimum temperatures during dormancy (overwintering) and of irrigation on the growth, development and productivity of many fodder plants. The phenology, assessment of winter hardiness, various aspects of root development and the level of forage and seed productivity have been discussed in the context of perennial grasses suitable for cultivation in the permafrost zone. The results of original research on the growth and development of sheathing and narrow-leaved cottongrass, rusty arctofila and arctic willow are presented along with material on seasonal changes in the phytomass and aftergrowth.
