Growth Impact of Tip Moth Control in 23-Year-Old Pines

Measurements were taken in plots of 22- and 23-year-old pines in Florida, Texas, and Arkansas that had received insecticide treatment for tip moth protection for 6 to 10 years after planting. A significant height advantage was found in treated loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) only in Florida and in shortleaf pines (P. echinata) in Arkansas as well as Florida. Some of the data indicated that height gains in the treated trees were inversely proportional to site quality, suggesting an interaction between site and species.
