摘要

Under this contract five studies were carried out to investigate the relationship of muscle function and skeletal growth and adaptation; (1) Studies of adaptations resulting from vertical repositioning of osseous elements in adults, in which a bite opening splint was used to stretch the elevator musculature; (2) Studies of anterioposterior osseous displacement in adults in which the lower border of the mandible was advanced with or without muscle detachment; (3) Studies of mandibular advancement in adults, using the C-osteotomy procedure; (4) Studies of vertical osseous displacement in juvenile animals; and (5) Studies of normal growth and development of the muscles of mastication. All studies were carried out in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) using a number of experimental procedures including cephalometrics, electromyography, histology, histochemistry, and biochemistry. The results of these studies shed new light on the relationship between muscle function and skeletal adaptation in the growing and non-growing individual.
