Research on the neurobiology of pain and analgesia has made significant progress in recent years, based in particular on the discovery of the endogenous opiates and their receptors. This monograph, based on a 1982 RAUS (Research Analysis and Utilization System) Review, includes discussions of the anatomy of pain suppression systems as they are currently understood; the neurochemistry of pain and analgesia; what is known of environmental influences on pain processing; behavioral and psychological components of pain treatment; and needs for future research.
