Self-condensation reactions of 2,3-diaminobenzoic acid (DAB) under several conditions consistently lead to an intensely colored material which displays striking absorption and remission of red light with only a 20 nm separation in maxima. This and other physical characteristics prompted the program to isolate this product as a potentially valuable energy transfer agent. In addition to the isolation and characterization of this condensation product of DAB, an independent effort was initiated to synthesize a cyclic tetramer of benzimidazole which was thought to be the source of the intense color and fluorescence. The project, therefore, included efforts to identify previously prepared substances and unambiguously to synthesize the candidate compound.
