Level Ice Resistance of USCGC POLAR SEA in Antarctica

Icebreaking resistance data and ice pressures on an instrumented bow panel were collected in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica aboard USCGC POLAR SEA during January 9-13, 1984. The results of icebreaking resistance tests are given in the report. Summary and conclusions for the icebreaking resistance test portion of the project are: Ice conditions in McMurdo Sound were excellent for level ice resistance testing. Thickness variations of only a few inches were normally recorded in half mile distances; The mean flexural strength during the five day test period was 44 psi; Thirty icebreaking resistance data points were obtained in Antarctic level ice of 3 to 6 feet at speeds as high as 12 knots.
