The phase I research developed efficient algorithms for using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) to compute this covariance of the random change in the geomagnetic core field. Optimal methods for handling 'observatory biases' were developed, and a computer program was written. The complete MLE software was tested on a sample low order problem. As a separate task, a preliminary analysis was made to identify the source of geomagnetic modeling error currently present in the least squares inverse problem for the main geomagnetic field.
