摘要

Particle flux through the New York Bight apex was calculated using current meter and suspended matter concentration data obtained from March to September 1979, to gain insight into the particle dynamics within the Hudson-Raritan estuarine plume discharged on the shelf. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations show the expected rapid decrease seaward (10 to 1 mg/l), but high concentrations often extended seaward around Shrewsbury Rocks on the New Jersey shore. Sampling during a September storm indicates that a single meteorological event can produce SPM fluxes in the plume comparable to spring runoff values. Storm events of the magnitude or greater probably occur a few tens of times during a typical year.
