Statistical Summary of 52 AID (Agency for International Development) Projects: Lessons on Project Effectiveness

The report statistically summarizes post-project evaluation reports by AID for 52 projects. Most are infrastructure projects but eighteen involve education, health or agricultural research. The projects are not randomly selected but they do represent a wide range on most characteristics. These projects have very small social and environmental costs and tend to benefit the poor and reduce inequalities. The correlation analysis indicates the primary importance of four factors to project effectiveness: good management; quality work force; a strong demand for the project output; and good linkages of the project organization to other agencies and the public.
