Guidelines for Accommodating the Handicapped on Crossings

The study addressed three issues involved in the design and operation of highway crossing structures that are accessible to physically handicapped pedestrians. Phase I was an investigation of the relationship of ramp lengths and gradients as well as the development of design criteria for rest areas on highway crossing structures. Phase II investigated the walkway surfaces that are detectable by visually impaired long cane users as well as those that present problems relating to slipping. Phase III was an investigation of orientation problems and cues employed by the visually impaired in using crossing structures. Five countermeasures were found to be useful in guiding the visually impaired.
