Pictorial History of Enlisted Men's Barracks of the U.S. Army, 1861-1895

The volume was conceived as a supplement to David Clary's two studies on the history of barracks furniture prepared for the NPS in 1982 and 1983. Clary's work offers a comprehensive treatment of the subject from the written sources. The aim of the volume is to lend the same thoroughness to the subject from the pictorial sources. The period covered encompasses the first interior view of a U.S. Army barrack, drawn in 1861 from Harper's Weekly, through a series of photographs taken between 1891 and 1895 by the Office of the Quartermaster General. Images in the collection are from the Records of the Office of the Quartermaster General at the National Archives.
