摘要

GAO examined trends in poverty among female-headed households and federal responses to this population group's problems. In 1983, the number of poor families headed by women totaled 3.6 million, an increase of more than 1 million in just 4 years. These families contained more than half of all poor children. The primary federal response has been programs, such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), that provide cash and other assistance. Another response has been work-related programs with the goal of increasing employability. For fiscal year 1986, the administration is proposing mandatory work programs for AFDC recipients.
