Reactions of Small Machine Shop Owners to the Automated Manufacturing Research Facility of the National Bureau of Standards

The shop owners expressed some interest in the sensors developed at the AMRF, in the calibration expertise of AMRF technicians, and in the overall performance of standard machine tools used in the AMRF. However, the majority of the sophisticated technology being developed was seen as too costly, too complex, and generally unnecessary to the small shop owners. The report concludes that the Bureau should focus on large companies, who can then provide the incentive for small shops to eventually use sophisticated automation technology.
