摘要

Kaluapapa National Historical Park was established December 22, 1980 to provide a community for Kaluapapa Leprosy patients, to preserve historic, traditional sites, cultural values and natural features. Archeological surveys undertaken prior to upgrading the water system at Kaluapapa have found abundant and undisturbed prehistoric features. A few features near the leprosy settlement have been disturbed. The features include a possible religious/residential complex, agricultural features, and house sites. There appears to have been 900 to 1000 years of continuous occupation. Traditional history of the island indicates that the primary crop grown in this area was sweet potatoes. The early history of Kaluapapa up to the establishment of the leprosy settlement in 1866 is also discussed.
