Competitive Assessment of the U.S. Flexible Manufacturing Systems Industry

The study is intended to assess the flexible manufacturing concept and how it has developed. There is no specific SIC classification which identifies FMS as an industry. FMS involves the products of many industries; machine tools, controls, computers, material handling, and robotics. Much of the information compiled in the report represents an initial effort to define and develop data for the FMS industry. The study is also intended to inform decision makers in the Executive and Legislative branches of the problems and prospects of the U.S. flexible manufacturing systems industry, as well as to alert and elicit advice from industry on these issues.
