The book contains recent legislation passed by Congress calling upon the Academy and its associated organizations to perform certain tasks. It has been prepared not only as a guide for those engaged in drafting legislation to initiate congressionally authorized studies but also as a record of such statutory enactments. The volume does not purport to contain all of the pertinent federal laws and actions-that would entail going back to the 1870's -although it does include the act of incorporation and its amendments as well as relevant executive orders. Instead, the book concentrates on the major legislation passed from the 86th through 98th Congresses (1959-1984).
