Development of Live, Attenuated Cold-Adapted Influenza Vaccines. Annual Report September 1984-September 1985

The data presented in the annual report meet all of the targetted objectives of the first year. It provides three new vaccine lines (6/2) with the updated surface antigens. Isolates received from the field (Houston) were evaluated, and once again genetic stability was demonstrated. Direct comparison of the donor strain of type B influenza virus (B/AA/1/66) with its wild type counterpart is being pursued using chain termination sequencing of the RNA genes, to identify the differences attributed to the cold-adapted process and eventually to link these specific changes with the cold adapted, temperature sensitivity and attenuation phenotypes of type B influenza virus. At this time, the report deals with the comparative sequencing of the NS and M genes. The sequencing of the NP gene is in progress.
