Examination of a series of pyrrolo-pyrimidine ribosylnucleosides has confirmed the authors observation that this type of compound is active against herpesviruses. These results lead to the conclusion that substitution of the 5-position of the heterocycle (the 'deaza' position) yields active compounds. In addition, an amino group or closely-related substituent is required in the 4-position for best activity. The information will be used to direct the synthesis of a new series of compounds modified in the sugar moiety of the molecule.
