The ECA survey is the largest, most comprehensive survey of mental disorders ever conducted in the U.S. Sponsored by NIMH, it was carried out by independent research teams at five university sites: Yale, Johns Hopkins, Washington U, Duke, and UCLA. Two waves of personal interviews were administered one year apart. Start dates for Wave 1 interviews varied at each site ranging from July 1980 at Yale to January 1983 at UCLA. The Wave 1 data tape holds 18,571 interviews with over 1350 variables per interview, contains a Format Library and the NIMH diagnostic variables. Documentation includes the Wave 1 Codebook, Data Book, and User's Guide. A printout of the diagnostic computer program is available separately.
