Condition Assessment of Underground Gas Distribution Piping Systems. Distribution Research Center Year-End Summary Report December 1982-May 1983

The summary report describes the results of first year work from December 1982 to May 1983 of Task 4 of the Distribution Research Center (DRC) program. Task 4 aims to develop an acoustic emission nondestructive evaluation technique for the in-situ monitoring and assessment of the physical condition and material properties of underground steel and cast-iron gas distribution piping systems. A major achievement during the reporting period is the development of an experimental approach for characterizing flaw types from low-event-rate acoustic emission sources. Also completed were the procurement and setup of a data acquisition system for obtaining and analyzing acoustic emission parameters and waveforms of the individual acoustic emission events.
