The research verifies the existence of optimum orientations on piezoelectric crystals for the fabrication of low-loss unidirectional Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) transducers. On these special crystal orientations, a simple single-level two electrode-per-wavelength SAW transducer can exhibit unidirectional behavior. Experimentally, an unweighted transducer of the type demonstrated an excess of 15 dB of directivity. The new concept eliminates the need for complex asymmetric transducer electrode configurations and/or phasing networks for implementing a undirectional SAW transducer.
