Rates of Growth in the Efficiencies of Capital and Labor and Total Factor Productivity: A Regional Analysis

The research has two major objectives. The first is to use manufacturing production data, on a state-by-state basis for 48 contiguous states, to analyze the rates of change in the efficiencies of capital and labor and in total factor productivity in the manufacturing sector from 1954-1972. Trend rates of changes in the efficiencies of the productive inputs and total factor productivity are compared across states as well as across two sub-periods (1954-1963 and 1963-1972). Moreover, the results are examined in a regional context to compare these rates of growth in total factor productivity and rayes of growth of the efficiencies of the inputs in the northern states with those of the southern states, and thereby to explain, in part, the migration of jobs and economic activity. The second objective of the research is to measure and analyze the rates of growth of technical progress within six SIC 2-digit manufacturing industry groups (Textiles (SIC 22), Apparel (SIC 23), Paper and Allied Products (SIC 26), Fabricated Metal Products (SIC 34), Nonelectrical Equipment (SIC 35), and Electrical Equipment (SIC 36) for those states in which the industries are found. Trend rates of change are also compared across states as well as across subperiods.
