Impact of and Recovery from Sewage Sludge Dumping at the Philadelphia Dumpsite

The report reviews the results of studies of the Philadelphia Sewage Sludge dumpsite carried out between 1973 and 1984 by NOAA, EPA, and other organizations. The site, located on the continental shelf east of the Maryland coast, was used for the disposal of sewage sludge from Philadelphia between 1973 and 1980. Studies were carried out before, during and after dumping. A substantial number of studies were undertaken during dumping to attempt to identify and quantify impact. These included measurements of metals and total organic carbon in sediments and biota, analyses of impacts on the benthos, and microbial studies.
