Report of the Workshop on Fundamental Research Needs in Surveying, Mapping, and Land Information Systems

Basic working groups established prior to the workshop focused on eight general research areas: (1) assessing user requirements and systems engineering approaches to land information systems; (2) surveying and mapping instrumentation needs; (3) positional standards and adjustment techniques; (4) efficient survey techniques; (5) clarifying collected data, blunder detection, and artificial intelligence; (6) combining data from different sources; (7) presentation methods which facilitate understanding of data and data combinations; and (8) integrating mechanisms for the storage and retrieval of data. The report is subdivided on the basis of the working group reports. For each group, there is a background statement reviewing current and potential research issues in the topic area considered, followed by a discussion of perceived research needs.
