National Medical Care Utilization and Expenditure Survey (NMCUES) Series B, Descriptive Report No. 20. Dental Insurance, Medicaid, and Their Relationship to Utilization of and Expenditures for Dental Services

The 1980 National Medical Care Utilization and Expenditure Surveys (NMCUES) collected data on the use of and expenditures for health care services from a randomly selected household sample panel representing the civilian noninstitutionalized population of the U.S. The panel consisted of 6,600 households (17,900 persons). Data collection was conducted from February 1980 through April 1981 and consisted of five rounds of interviews. In addition to the use of and expenditures for health care services, data were collected on sample persons' demographic, and socioeconomic characteristics, health status, employment, and health insurance coverage. This report has two purposes: (1) description of the use, charges, and sources of payment for dental services in the U.S. in 1980, and (2) examination of whether Medicaid or private dental insurance coverage of dental expenses made a difference in the likelihood of making dental visits, the frequency of visits, services used, charges incurred, and the sources of payment for the charges.
