Industrial Hygiene Characterization of Fluidized Bed Combustion Processes

The objective of the study was to characterize current or potential occupational health problems of the fluidized bed combustion process. The assessment described herein was based on in-depth industrial hygiene surveys at three fluidized bed boiler (FBB) facilities selected to represent the industry. The results from the surveys demonstrate limited potential for occupational exposure to airborne contaminants. None of the air contaminants monitored exceeded OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits. Only sulfur dioxide, coal tar pitch volatiles, and nuisance dust approached the recommended ACGIH Threshold Limit Values. Mutagenic activity was found in high volume and bulk samples at two of the sites and appeared to correlate roughly with the air concentration of coal tar pitch volatiles detected.
