Root regeneration in several species of plants was enhanced by a five minute preplant root soak in from 1,000 to 3,000 mg/liter aqueous solutions of indolebutyric acid (TBA). Positive responses were confined to coarse rooted difficult-to-transplant species such as tulip tree, red oak, black walnut, white oak, black tupelo and redbud. Fibrous rooted species such as silver maple and sugar maple did not respond to the auxin treatment and two species of pine were adversely affected. Root soaks were the most effective technique utilized to apply auxin. Tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) was selected as a model system for indepth studies on root regeneration under controlled conditions as well as field sites.
