Epidemiology of Child Pedestrian Injury by Collision with a Motor Vehicle in Puerto Rico

The study was designed to investigate the characteristics of pedestrians less than twenty years of age involved in traffic collisions with motor vehicles in Puerto Rico, during 1982. Comparisons between the age and sex distribution of the study population and the general population were made. The characteristics of the young pedestrians involved in a collision with a motor vehicle during 1982 showed an over representation of males 6 to 9 and 16 to 19 years of age. Age specific incidence rates for the two groups shows an excess risk of being involved in a collision with a motor vehicle. The case fatality ratio was greater for the females in the study group in all age groups.
