摘要

The Programmable Implantable Medication System (PIMS) was designed, at the time of the original proposal for the contract, to be a safe and effective approach to the delivery of insulin to insulin dependent diabetics, with an implanted, remotely controlled, variable rate system. During the course of this contract work, the device progressed from the planning stage to the stage of application for initial human implantation. Fabrication of prototype models of PIMS progressed in a fashion very close to that described in the initial proposal. Implantations in pancreatectomized diabetic dogs were started in 1982. Over the following 2.5 years, experience was gained in use of the system. Developmental obstacles included insulin aggregation, peritoneal reaction to the implanted catheter, and microcracking of the diaphragm.
